Demons

Demons of the Past

~*~*~

The demons of our past stand naked,
Running free through the fields of our mind.
And we hide, we hide from ourselves,
This past which cannot be denied.

The ranger passes through, singing,
And the mist does slowly disappear.
Yet the demons go on cowering,
In these songs we hold so dear.

Raging through the wild dust storms,
These demons bring naught but strife.
Lurking, waiting, to pounce upon us,
As we go about trying to live this short life.

The rain pours, and the willow whispers,
Yet all that can be heard are the voices.
These demons, always screaming in the head,
Of the past, and once made choices.

Exhaustion seeps into the mind so silently,
Exacerbating the insanity within these thoughts.
The demons feed with such power,
The battle seems lost even before it has been fought.

Somewhere along the paths of destruction,
Lie the shadows that evolve from the light.
And these demons striving so hard to kill from within us,
Too must die at the hands of the fading night.

~*~*~

I bow down to the demons,
For I was but a truant,
Waiting in the darkness,
Never stepping into the light.

And fellow bloggers and readers, I am back! I am just too much in love with writing to take a break. Glad the phase is over, glad that I could make up my mind.

    1. Thanks Jingle! It didn’t occur to me that it is like Harry Potter, until I read it again after reading your comment. You’re right, it is a lot like Harry Potter! 😀

  1. you know we often think our art brings out what we are, or what we are going through… would you say this was allegorical to your life?

    1. You’re very right Susha, we often bring out ourselves in our writing. I guess as of right now, you can say this is quite allegorical to my life, but hopefully it takes an optimistic turn like the poem did. 🙂 Thank you for visiting!

    1. Thanks Christine! I like the words you used to describe it, “dark silk”. I am glad you liked it. I am yet to read the chapters to your novel, and I will do so as soon as possible.

  2. WELCOME BACK!!! I knew you would be back! We are just too irresistible for you !! 😉

Great poem, DP… those demons of the past just lurk around, waiting for a chance to pounce on us…drain from us the little moisture of hope…
They really are the “Dementors” in our lives (a Harry Potter term.. but if you like that, you will know), sucking away at our chance to happiness..eating away our lives

The feeling in this poem is amazingly stark!
ME LOVES!!! My suggestion: please post it on UDPS too… it’s perfect material (if you know what I mean) 🙂

IT’S GREAT TO SEE YOU BACK, IN FULL SWING!!! many hugs…

    1. Yay! I am glad to be back! You’re right Kavita, you all are too irresistible for me to keep away. 😀

I really love the way you understood the poem, comparing them to Dementors, yes these demons are like Dementors, cold, chilling, sucking up all life in us. That’s why they eventually fade away in the warmth. 🙂

I didn’t realize my piece sounded like Harry Potter until I read all these comments, and I feel really happy about it 😀

I’ll take up your suggestion and post this on UDPS, haven’t been there in a while.

Many hugs to you too, I am very glad to be back. And even gladder to know that I was missed 😉

        1. Oh.. and I hadn’t realized Amanda and Jingle had mentioned Harry Potter as well.. hehehe… cuz when I posted my comment, none were approved by you, so I couldn’t see any!
So…you see… we weren’t even influenced by each others’ words.. hehehe

DP, you were all for HP on this one… unintentionally ofcourse 🙂 How CUTE is that!!! We should really have a movie theme sometime… how fun that would be.. no?

          1. Haha, yes it is funny to write and find that everyone can relate it to something you had no intentions of relating it to. This is the first time this has happened to me 😀

I actually have a poem I wrote especially based on Harry Potter, written shortly after the fifth book came out. I’ll post it sometime.

I agree, we could do a movie theme sometime, that would be really fun. We just need to decide on a movie or series of movies. 🙂

  3. I am so happy you’re back my friend, this was like a Harry Potter story to me too…your imagination is just too wonderful and awesome not to share with us 🙂 Loved it 🙂 Hugs to you xxx

    1. Thanks Amanda! Harry Potter is awesome, I am happy to know that this piece made you all think of Harry Potter, though it wasn’t intentional.

I am glad to be back too, only I know how badly I’ve been itching to write.

      Hugs and much love!

  4. I am glad too..
Very true words.. I am delighted to read it this morning.. Have no words to praise; won’t even try..

It’s the Demons that keeps me alive..

  5. I’m sooo glad you are back. Sometimes we just need a break…

This is well and truely done. And, once we take control back from the jabbering mind demons, we feel and do better … Nicely paced … we may not be able to deny the past, but we can certainly let it go … “must die at the hands of the night.”

    Poem on ….

    1. Thanks Jamie, you’re right, we just need a break sometimes. I am glad this one didn’t last long.

You’re right, we can certainly let the past go, and then these demons will haunt no more. 🙂

  6. This is well written, I believe the phrase: “And these demons striving so hard to kill from within us, Too must die at the hands of the fading night.” sums it all up. I believe we can either live under condemnation for the past choices we had made or we can go into the light and live in freedom and let go of the guilt. No more demons tormenting us….

  7. Great poem!…as always
your poems are so good that…calling them “great” is like, just stating the obvious..
but, what hasn’t stopped surprising me is your choice of pics for your poems, I love this one!

    1. Thank you Naveen. I am quite fond of this particular poem as well.

It is not true that I always write great poetry…often I feel my work is not up to the mark. Thank you for appreciating it though.

As for choosing pictures, yes this picture in particular stood out when I looked for something to do with demons. Glad you liked it. I only wish I could take photographs like that… maybe someday…

  8. dear deadpoet,

i really don’t know what pushed you this far to write this poem. but i admire your courage to do away with the whitewashed emotion laden poetry. yours is a deconstructivist and non-conformist. truly yours.

the essence of this poem borders on two choices; the choice to be redeemed after passing through that phase of darkness struggling with inner demons. and the other, is to accept that fate has already been decided, to embrace the darkness as one’s reality.

but the truth is, no matter how we keep on denying these life phase of darkness, admit that they are just part of life and should not be a stumbling block for us to live life the fullest and the best that we can.

thank you for sharing this bravely.

    1. Thank you so much for your thoughts Marvin. I am very happy to see that you could see my approach to the topic so clearly.

You are very right, we should just accept them and not let them get in our way to live life to the fullest. It is hard to forget things we wish to forget, and sometimes these very things may come back to us in the future to haunt us, but we should be brave and learn to face them rather than hide from them.

I think we all need to learn lessons on how to live life, then again I guess that is why we are living it. Sad things happen, which may leave us hurt for a long time, but we need to learn to put the pain behind us and live each day as it comes.

Thank you for your appreciation and thoughts. You have an amazing ability to understand.
